The woodland
Oakley Park has about 3 acres of woodland, which is a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) and is lovely to explore at any time of year. The woods is full of diverse wildlife including a protected species of bats and a variety of birds, reptiles, foxes and squirrels. There are pathways throughout the woodland, which are relatively even but unmade in places and may be difficult to navigate with wheelchairs and pushchairs.
The woodland features a small pond with a dipping platform and a number of streams which flow through the park and woodland to eventually feed into Fleet Pond. There are interpretation boards with information about the trees in the woodland and the pond life in and around the pond.
There is plenty of space to explore or sit and watch the wildlife, and there is a bench in the woodland, near the pond, overlooking children’s playground.
Orienteering course
The Friends of Oakley Park and Southern Navigators Club have a permanent, 20-post orienteering course in Oakley Park. Orienteering is a sport where competitors of all ages and abilities navigate their way, at their own pace, between features marked on a special map. The course is particularly suitable for families or anyone who would like to learn more about navigating. For legal reasons we cannot put a map directly on to the website. If you would like a copy of the map and instructions, then please email [Oakleypark – Orienteering] and the information will be automatically sent to you.
